A confusing Spielberg Sci-Fi
Legendary director Steven Spielberg returns to what helped make him one of the most famous directors on the planet: Aliens. From Close Encounters of the Third Kind to E.T., Spielberg knows what he is doing when it comes to classic science fiction. So naturally, Disclosure Day felt like we might see the return of classic Spielberg.
The trailers built up something exciting. A mysterious news broadcast stops the nation, something is wrong with Emily Blunt’s character. It looked mysterious, unsettling and, most importantly, like the kind of big sci-fi movie we haven’t seen for many years.
So, did it become another Spielberg classic?
No.
Oh no.
Excellent question. I’m still not sure.
If you were to ask me to explain the plot of Disclosure Day before the movie finally reaches “Disclosure Day”, I’m not sure I could do it.
There’s something about a deadly mind-control stick. There’s mind reading. There’s a replica of a house built so someone can re-experience their trauma. There are government conspiracies. And, I guess, aliens too.
The movie is essentially two and a half hours of people chasing other people, with the addition of what I wrote above
What is frustrating is thaat cast is genuinely good.
Emily Blunt gives a great performance and remains completely committed to everything happening around her, even when the story doesn’t really commit to much
There’s enough talent involved both in front of and behind the camera that you spend most of the movie waiting for everything to finally make sense.
(Spoiler, it doesn’t
I have spoken to a few peoople that have seen itt, and mostt of them ended up giving up, which is upsetting, because the final 20 minutes really worked for me.
Suddenly, the movie becomes what the trailer promised, mysterious, exciting, and a hint of actual alien’s
It’s the movie I thought I was sitting down to watch two hours earlier.
There are pieces of a great Steven Spielberg sci-fi movie scattered throughout Disclosure Day. The performances are strong, the central idea is exciting and there is a sense of fear in the early and ending sequences.
Unfortunately, you have to get through a lot to reach something worth the time. Should you watch it? I wouldn’t rewatch it but if you want a few minutes of Spielberg gold shining through, and you can get it cheap, maybe watch it then.
