After 27 years Futurama has aired its final episode. Again.
The classic animated series wrapped up its latest season with an episode titled “Final Ending: The Last Conclusion.” The episode arrived on September 28 and marked the end of Futurama’s 14th Season.
Of course, calling an episode the “finale” when it comes to talking about Futurama, is different to a normal show.
Futurama Is Over
Since first premiering in 1999, Futurama has has the unique status of finishing three separate times.
The series originally aired on Fox before being cancelled, returned through a series of direct-to-DVD movies, found another home on Comedy Central, ended again, and was eventually resurrected yet again by Hulu.
At this point, cancelling Futurama feels less like ending a television series and more like temporarily inconveniencing it.
The latest finale even embraces the show’s unusual relationship with endings. Voice actor Billy West explained that the writers approach finales knowing there is always a possibility the show won’t return, while still leaving themselves a way back in should another revival happen.
And creator Matt Groening doesn’t exactly sound ready to bury the Planet Express crew either.
Speaking following the latest finale, Groening said there are still plenty more stories the team wants to tell, adding: “We will rise again.”
Let’s be real, he’s probably right. I expect to see Futurama: The Instagram Reels series soon enough.
But It’s Not Fully Over
Even though Season 14, and the show as we know it is currently finished, we already know there is more Futurama on the way.
Hulu has announced three new supersized specials, described as “XXXL-Sized” episodes, which are currently in production. The first is expected to arrive in 2027 and will be an Xmas-themed special.
Season 15 has not been announced.
That leaves the long-term future of the series uncertain once those specials have been released. But considering we’re talking about a show that has already survived multiple endings, networks and revivals, saaying goodbye to the show now seems like a fantastic way to have to awkwardly update this article in two years.
For now, Futurama, as a series, has ended.
Again.
See you at the next series finale.
